The town of Merrillville is the latest community looking to add a social worker to its police department.

The Portage Police Department could soon be adding a social worker. The city council voted Tuesday to add the position into the city's salary ordinance.

The Porter County Sheriff's Office is looking to hire a social worker. The county council and commissioners have approved the creation of a police resources and outreach (PRO) coordinator position.
