Making it easier to get around Northwest Indiana without a car is one of the goals of the Region's latest transportation plan. The Northwestern Indiana Regional Planning Commission (NIRPC) has been working with a consultant on its 2050+ plan.

Northwestern Indiana Regional Planning Commission employees are getting a pay increase. The 2023 budget approved by the full commission Thursday includes a seven-percent raise.

Making it easier for Northwest Indiana residents to make more trips by walking, biking or transit is one of the goals of the region's latest transportation planning effort. The Northwestern Indiana Regional Planning Commission (NIRPC) is updating its NWI 2050 plan for Lake, Porter and LaPorte counties, and it wants residents to share what transportation issues are affecting their daily lives.

Efforts to build a continuous bike trail from Chicago to Michigan continue to move forward. The remaining gaps in the 60-mile Marquette Greenway Trail are being filled one piece at a time, thanks to an infusion of state and federal funding.

Northwest Indiana still has some work to do, when it comes to getting its highway bridges in good condition, according to Scott Weber with the Northwestern Indiana Regional Planning Commission.

It could be possible to ride on a continuous bike trail from Chicago to New Buffalo within the next five years. After years of planning, the Marquette Greenway Trail recently got more than $20 million from the federal RAISE program and the state READI program.
