A major crash last month has prompted the Highland Police Department to join the South Lake County Crash Reconstruction Team.

The town of Highland is getting a Safe Haven Baby Box. It allows people to anonymously surrender infants. The town council Monday approved a lease and maintenance agreement with the nonprofit group Safe Haven Baby Boxes, Inc., allowing one to be installed at the Highland Central Fire Station.

Highland residents will soon see a sewer rate hike. Under an ordinance passed by the town council Monday, the average household using 4,000 gallons will pay another $9.14 a month — an increase of almost 33 percent.

The Highland Police Department wants its money back from officers who go through the police academy at the department's expense, only to leave for another agency. Currently, Highland officers are contractually required to reimburse the department for training and equipment costs, if they leave before three years of service. It's become more of an issue in recent months, as more new officers leave Highland.

Efforts to create a sustainability commission in Highland are drawing a number of questions from town council members. Residents proposed establishing the commission to help identify grant opportunities and propose environmentally-friendly policies to the town council, among other things.
