Lafayette woman leads officers on chase, evades custody, crashes police vehicle and dies, police sayA Lafayette resident is dead, after apparently stealing a police SUV from LaPorte County sheriff's deputies who were trying to take her into custody Thursday. Indiana State Police believe Melissa L. Collins, 21, was secured in the front passenger seat, when she was able to manipulate the handcuffs, unbuckle the seat belt and take possession of the vehicle.

Last week's winter storm kept Indiana State Police busy. Troopers from the Lowell Post say they responded to 153 property damage crashes, 28 injury crashes, 83 slide-offs and 157 calls to assist motorists from Thursday afternoon through Sunday morning.
