Kankakee River Basin and Yellow River Basin Development Commission

  • Today: Former state Senator Karen Tallian and current Senator Rodney Pol, Jr. are on "Regionally Speaking" to talk about a summer General Assembly study committee which will look into the potential health benefits of THC products, including marijuana, Delta 8 and Delta 9. It is not known, however, if they will examine decriminalizing marijuana. Both Tallian and Pol discuss that point, since legislative leaders sent the issue to a study committee on public health, behavorial health and human services. The study committee recommendations are advisory only, but those recommendations are considered serious enough from which to create bills which could come up next session. We also have local reaction and commentary to the Uvalde, Texas school shooting from Laura Wynn, who founded Indiana Parenting Institute. She offers some tips for parents to help their youngsters deal with the issue of feeling safe in school.
  • Today: Scott Pelath, executive director of the Kankakee River Basin and Yellow River Basin Development Commission, is on "Regionally Speaking" to talk about the organization based in Portage and what is planned for 2022 – “a lot going on this year.” The Commission is responsible for water resource planning and development on the rivers in eight counties, including Lake, Porter, Newton, Jasper and LaPorte Counties. Much of the work involves finding solutions to flooding issues along both rivers, since they flow west into Illinois.
