Lake and Porter counties ended 2023 with higher unemployment rates than the prior year.

Lake County's unemployment rate rose to five percent in November, according to the Indiana Department of Workforce Development. That's up from 4.3 percent during the same period last year. Meanwhile, Porter County's unemployment rate was 3.7 percent, half a percentage point higher than last November.

Unemployment rates are down a tenth of a percent in Lake and Porter counties. Lake County's October unemployment rate was 4.7 percent, while Porter County's was 3.4, according to the Indiana Department of Workforce Development. But those numbers are up slightly, compared to October of 2022.

Lake County's unemployment rate dropped by more than a full percentage point last month, but it still remains the highest in the state. Lake County's September unemployment rate was 4.8 percent, down from 5.9 in August but up from 3.7 in September of 2022, according to the Indiana Department of Workforce Development.

Lake County's unemployment rate continues to tick higher. The August numbers released by the Indiana Department of Workforce Development show Lake County's rate increased a tenth of a percent to 5.9 last month — an increase of nine-tenths of a percent from the same period last year.

Lake County once again had the state's highest unemployment rate in July at 5.8 percent. That's unchanged from the month before, but a full percentage point higher than July of 2022.

Northwest Indiana's unemployment rates dropped from March to April but remain in line with the same period last year.
