The Bail Project believes “Freedom should be free”. The organization has been the subject of many conversations as a bill went all the way through the Indiana statehouse and was recently signed into law by Governor Eric Holcomb. Lakeshore Public Radio’s Dee Dotson recently spoke with advocate and mother Nikki Sterling about the work she did to get the legislation passed but we also wanted to speak directly with Twyla Carter of The Bail Project to get the organizations thoughts on how this new legislation will affect their industry. House Enrolled Act 1300 a bill that would prohibit charitable bail organizations from bailing out anyone who is charged with a violent crime in Indiana or is charged with a felony and has a prior conviction for a crime of violence. Lakeshore Public Radio’s Dee Dotson recently had a chance to speak with Nikki Sterling, a staunch advocate for changes to be made in Indiana laws to regulate charitable bail funds ever since the murder of her son, Dylan McGinnis, by an individual who had been bailed out by The Bail Project.
