A $3 million donation to Purdue University Northwest will be used to develop an “impact lab” that’s expected to contribute to economic development in the region.
The school says the lab will be a place for entrepreneurship, innovation and education collaboration.
Alumnus David Roberts and his wife Susan Roberts made the donation. It matches $5 million from the recent $50 million awarded to Northwest Indiana by the Indiana Economic Development Corporation.
Purdue is evaluating potential sites near the Hammond campus for the lab. Chancellor Thomas Keon says he is hopeful the lab will open by the end of 20-22.

A 50-thousand dollar grant from the Indiana Office of Energy Development helped the town of Cedar Lake purchase two new hybrid emergency-response vehicles for the police and fire departments. "Drive Clean Indiana" -- formerly known as South Shore Clean Cities -- put in the application for town officials in the 20-20 Public Safety Resilience grant cycle.
The departments recently received a new Ford Explorer Hybrid and a new Ford Escape Hybrid through the grant program. Both vehicles were purchased locally. The two hybrid vehicles compliment Cedar Lake’s efforts to improve air quality with cleaner fleet vehicles. Roughly 75 PERCENT of the town’s vehicle fleet is E-85 compatible, which fulfills a goal set in 2008.
The program is funded through the U.S. Department of Energy through the State Energy Program.

Demolition of the old South Shore Line station on 11th Street in Michigan City will mean intermittent closures for westbound traffic this week. The demolition is part of the South Shore Line Double Track project.
Larson-Danielson Construction executive Dave Merkel told the city's Board of Public Works that where’s no intention for debris to be falling in the public right of way....but the fence is only 8 feet from the building. He wants to make sure no one is affected if a stray brick or something goes the wrong direction.
Barricades at Pine and 11th streets would be put in place when the street is to be closed, and there would be a Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District flagger on site, to communicate with trains.
