Hoosiers will be able to purchase alcohol on Sundays starting March 4.
Gov. Eric Holcomb (R-Ind.) will finalize the historic legalization of Sunday carryout alcohol sales at a ceremonial bill signing Wednesday afternoon.
After failing to pass at the Indiana Statehouse for decades, the bill breezed through the legislature this year due to an alliance between liquor and grocery stores that advocated for Sunday sales but rejected any expansion of cold beer sales.
The bill was originally set to take effect July 1, but lawmakers amended the measure to make it effective as soon as Holcomb signs it into law. That means liquor stores throughout the state are scrambling to take advantage of the new opportunity to be open seven days a week.
Wednesday’s ceremonial bill signing is not open to the public. Lt. Gov. Suzanne Crouch, House Speaker Brian Bosma, Senate President David Long, Sen. Ron Alting (R-Lafayette) and Rep. Ben Smaltz (R-Auburn) will join Holcomb for the signing.
