BP says some flaring took place Monday morning at its Whiting refinery.
Refinery officials say in a statement that flares are an essential safety device to help manage excess gases during maintenance or operational disruptions. That may cause people in nearby communities to see and hear the flares from outside the refinery.
BP says it's monitoring air emissions and will make notifications, if necessary. The flaring had concluded as of Monday afternoon.
