An ordinance that would allow Portage residents to own chickens is moving forward with the city council. The measure presented Tuesday would let residents keep up to five female chickens in backyard coops, with some restrictions.
Council member Brian Gulley said the council will take input on the proposed ordinance and make some adjustments before taking a final vote. "This ordinance closely mirrors what's done in Valpo and Chesterton, and we thought that was a good starting point. We made a few little tweaks for us," Gulley explained during Tuesday's meeting
Gulley said the ordinance committee did discuss a registration requirement, but ultimately decided against it, at the recommendation of the police department.
