Cleanup continues from Friday's tornado

Town of Merrillville website

Cleanup continues after a tornado struck the Merrillville area Friday. The town says its trash hauler, Waste Management, will place dumpsters in the Forrest Hills and Madison Meadows neighborhoods. It's also planning additional pickups.

Residents of those neighborhoods only may also dump items at the Merrillville Street Department's dumpsters. The street department continues driving through town to remove debris, with help from neighboring communities' crews.

Town officials say no injuries have been reported because of the storm, but some homes were damaged. The Dean and Barbara White Community Center remains available as a warming center.

The National Weather Service has confirmed that an EF-1 tornado struck from Merrillville to Hobart. The NWS also plans to investigate damage in the Valparaiso and Portage areas in the coming days.
