Unemployment rates continue to climb in Northwest Indiana.
Lake County now has the state's second-highest unemployment rate at 5.3 percent, according to the Indiana Department of Workforce Development. That's an increase from 4.9 percent the month before, but a decrease from 5.8 percent in February of 2022. Porter County's unemployment rate was 4.1 percent in February, up from 3.8 percent in January and 3.9 percent last February.
East Chicago has the highest unemployment rate of any major city in Indiana at 7.3 percent. Valparaiso has one of the lowest rates locally at 3.7 percent.
