Local school districts will be asking voters for a property tax increase on the May ballot.
The School Town of Highland is asking for permission to raise taxes by up to 32 cents per $100 of assessed valuation for the next eight years. The Tri-Creek School Corporation in Lowell wants to raise taxes by up to 21 cents — although it would be closer to eight cents compared to this year, since some debt payments are rolling off. And the School Town of Munster is asking voters to renew its 2017 referendum for another eight years at up to 42 cents per $100 of assessed valuation.
All three school corporations cite the need to recruit and retain teachers and support staff, as well as the need to fund safety initiatives and educational programs.
