Crashes injure four, close southbound I-65 for hours

Four people were hurt in a chain reaction crash on I-65 in Jasper County Monday morning.

Indiana State Police say it began around 1:30 a.m., when a semi-tanker loaded with liquid sugar left the southbound lanes and rolled over in the median. Emergency crews worked to offload the sugar and tow the truck, causing a long backup.

Around 5:45 a.m., police say the driver of a box truck failed to notice that traffic had stopped. It reportedly rear-ended a Subaru, causing it to hit a Toyota, which then hit the back of a semi-trailer.

The driver of the Subaru had to be extricated and was taken to a hospital with serious injuries. A four-year-old in a car seat in the Toyota had life-threatening injuries and was eventually taken to Comer Children's Hospital. The child's parents were also taken to a local hospital.

Indiana State Police say the crash remains under investigation, and findings will be turned over to the Jasper County Prosecutor's Office for consideration of possible charges.

Southbound I-65 remained closed until 11:00 a.m.
