December graduations cause enrollment dip at Lake Central

Enrollment at the Lake Central School Corporation is down — or up slightly, depending on how you count.

Enrollment dropped from 9,094 in September to 9,055 in February. But Director of Business Services Rob James says the district also had 56 December graduates.

"So we are actually up 12 kids," James told the school board Monday.

Because those December graduates are no longer in the school building, Lake Central doesn't receive state funding for them. But James said legislation in the Indiana General Assembly could change that.

"But, it's been there before, and unfortunately, it hasn't made it out," James noted. "So we'll see what happens over here in the next two months, and hopefully, it'll stay in there this time."

The amount of Education Fund money each school corporation gets from the state depends on the number of students they have on the September and February count days.
