Portage City Council To Consider Smoking Ban

PORTER COUNTY TOBACCO EDUCATION AND PREVENTION COALITION

PORTAGE - The Portage City Council has done its first reading of a proposed ordinance to turn the city smoke free.  But there could likely be amendments to that proposal.

Megan Fisher, Policy Committee Chairperson for the Porter County Tobacco Education and Prevention Coalition says the ordinance committee is pulling back on the comprehensiveness of the original proposal.

Fisher, who is also the Director of Recovery Engagement at Porter-Starke Services, says leaving the indoor restaurants, bars and clubs out of the ordinance doesn't go far enough in protecting the people who patronize the establishments and the people who work there.

The city council intends to present its amended ordinance at its August 3rd meeting.
