Bitter Cold Prompts Warning from Local Meteorologist

NORTHWEST INDIANA - The bitter cold temperatures and a little snow are going to stick around in the Region this week.  Eric Lenning, Meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Chicago, explains.

"Well you know lately people have happy if it's actually double digits.  That's our light at the end of the tunnel right now and that's pretty much going to be the case through the remainder of the week," Lenning says.

He says the highs will be in the teens each day, maybe getting to 20 on Wednesday, but the weather will be locked into this unseasonably cool pattern through at least the weekend.

"In terms of mid February isn't all that unusual but it's certainly a lot colder than it has been this winter."

In addition to the cold, Northwest Indiana will have some periods of snow off-and-on and Lenning says it's important to be prepared.

"I just want to make sure that people are aware that even though it's not necessarily crazy cold and we don't always have wind chill advisories or wind chill warnings it's still important to extra layers in the vehicles with you and keep your gas tanks filled up  because you do not want to be caught outside for any length of time when it's zero or 10 degrees above," Lenning says.

No large amounts of snow accumulation is expected this week.
