A Gary Legislative Body Considering Limiting Day Care Centers in the City

Facebook

GARY - The Gary Common Council is considering changes to its approval process of day care businesses in the city.

The "Times" reports there has been a steady stream of applications being submitted to the Common Council for in-home day cares. According to the latest data available, there are already 55 registered in the city, as of last fall.

Councilwoman Tai Adkins, Democrat from the 4th district, said she noticed day care applications coming before the council nearly every month that they meet.

Adkins suggested the city craft legislation limiting a certain number of home day cares within a 1-mile radius — after extensive research is conducted to determine a fair, reasonable limit.

Councilman Ronald Brewer, Democrat at-large, agreed with Adkins' suggestion for a limit, saying it would be ideal to have legislation on the books so there are fewer applications that come before the council.

The state of Indiana covers day care center regulations, but zoning is a local matter.
