WASHINGTON D.C. - A 32 year-old Hammond man is now charged in the January 6th insurrection at the U.S. Capitol.
The "Times" reports Kash Lee Kelly led authorities to himself as he allegedly posted photos on his social media platforms that helped secure the charges against him.
The FBI filed charges against Kelly on Friday using the photos as evidence that show Kelly scaling the walls of the Capitol building, standing at the base of a statute and posing for the photo, waving an American flag, and being interviewed afterward in the street about why the mob stormed the building.
Kelly is charged with two misdemeanors, for knowingly entering or remaining in any restricted building or grounds without lawful authority, and with intent to impede or disrupt the orderly conduct of government business.
He’s also charged with entering the Capitol grounds and parading and picketing there despite not having the authority.
The FBI was sent video and pictures captured on people's cell phones, placing Kelly at the Capitol that day. The images appear to be screenshots of Kelly’s Facebook account, according to the FBI.
Kelly had been free on bond in a separate drug-related gang case in the Northern District of Indiana, but that bond was revoked Thursday for violating the terms of his release.
His sentencing has been continued repeatedly over the last three years. It is now scheduled for February 11th.
Kelly is reportedly the first known person from Northwest Indiana to be charged by the FBI in the insurrection.
