CROWN POINT - Former Lake County Councilman Jamal Washinton's trial for domestic battery has been continued for a third time.
The "Times" reports the 47 year-old Washington had been scheduled to go to trial in March. He is accused of hitting Gary Councilwoman LaVetta Sparks-Wade and holding her against her will at her home for nearly 16 hours in January of 2019.
Washington's attorney, Michael Lambert, and Lake County Deputy Prosecutor Jessica Arnold both requested from the Judge that the trial be rescheduled because of issues with ongoing discovery.
There was an issue with a laptop that needed to be examined and the defense attorney and prosecutor both agreed to get the issue resolved.
Judge Diane Boswell granted the request and set a status hearing for April 2nd and warned the attorneys that her trial schedule is quickly filling up and she suggested they work to schedule a new trial date soon.
