NORTHWEST INDIANA - Volunteers are needed at the Food Bank of Northwest Indiana.
Sarah Barnard, Volunteer Coordinator for the Food Bank is asking for the help for a Mobile Market in East Chicago on Wednesday, January 20th.
Barnard says COVID-19 has driven up the need for the Food Bank's services.
"We are currently operating at heightened capacity, at an increase of about sixty percent of our normal distribution because of COVID response," Barnard says. "
The Mobile Market events are a drive thru experience that the Food Bank of Northwest Indiana has adapted due to COVID.
Barnard says, "we have volunteers that assist with loading the trunks and also registering all of the cars so that we have a record of how many families we're serving that day."
Barnard says in 2019 the food bank distributed about six million pounds of food. In 2020, the organization handed-out over 10 million pounds of food.
The Mobile Market will be at Washington Elementary School. The distribution will be from 3 p.m. until 5 p.m. Volunteers are required to be on-site from 2:30 p.m. until 5 p.m.
