New Non-Profit Seeks to Help Homeowners

city of Valparaiso

VALPARAISO -
The City of Valparaiso is helping to launch a new nonprofit organization created to assist qualifying homeowners in maintaining their homes.

Valparaiso Mayor Matt Murphy says Home Team Valpo is a way for the city and others to come together to help families make their homes safer and more  comfortable.  In partnership with Habitat for Humanity of Porter County, Home Team Valpo will be city-inspired and volunteer-driven.  Home Team Valpo will be about lifting up individuals and neighborhoods, improving quality of life, one home at a time, according to Murphy.

To initiate Home Team Valpo, the City of Valparaiso is providing seed funds by offering a dollar-for-dollar matching grant, up to $50,000. The Porter County Community Foundation has stepped up as the organization’s first substantial donor, providing a $10,000 grant.

The new nonprofit has scheduled a Fall Cleanup as their first event and is seeking homeowners who need work completed, skilled and unskilled workers to volunteer their time, plus financial contributions and donations of new building materials.

The first Home Team Valpo workday will be Saturday, October 24th, from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm. Home Team Valpo invites homeowners to apply for help with exterior yard clean-up efforts on this workday, and future work days, and encourages volunteer groups to sign up to participate in groups of 10 to 15. To apply for Home Team Valpo services, find an application at the city of Valparaiso website.
