NORTHWEST INDIANA- A Michigan City middle school teacher as been chosen as a Indiana Policy Fellow by Teach Plus Indiana for the 2020-21 school year.
Teach Plus is a national nonprofit organization that is focused on empowering teachers in the classroom as well as at the policy level. The organization empowers teachers to lead improvements in education policy and instructional practice.
Gayle Davis, a teacher at Barker Middle School in Michigan City, was one of nine teachers chosen from across the state and is the only one from the Region.
Rachel Hathaway, Indiana Executive Director for Teach Plus says being a fellow gives teachers a voice when policy decisions are being made.
"What we do is instead focus on how do we build up our teachers tool kits and their resources and their insight and expertise to be able to advocate for themselves," Hathaway says.
Hathaway said Davis was chosen as a fellow because she had highlighted some key leadership in group and in individual activities. She also says Davis has a calming presence and offers opportunity for dialogue and is solution oriented.
