GARY - Gary Mayor Jerome Prince is forming an advisory commission on police reform. He made the announcement of the executive order at 10 a.m. Thursday. Mike Gonzalez, Media Spokesperson, for the city says the task force will be looking at several aspects.
"And the idea is look at everything from use-of-force to policies and procedures, Gonzalez says. Just like what he's doing with most, with all of the policies and procedures within the city of Gary since he's taken office, take a close look at what's worked, at what needs to be revised and take action. Part of this is of course driven by the murder of George Floyd by police officers in Minneapolis."
Gonzalez says Prince thinks it's important to take a close look at policing to figure out what works and what needs to be changed. The mayor will name the commission members and determine their responsibilities in the near future. Gonzalez says the commission will have a good amount of latitude in determining what needs to be addressed and how to proceed.
