NORTHWEST INDIANA- NIPSCO is still responding to the widespread power outages across Northwest Indiana and some may not see power restored until tomorrow (Thursday), according to the utility's website.
The outages are due to a second round of strong storms that came through northern Indiana mid-morning on Wednesday and the sustained high winds still in effect as of Wednesday afternoon after 2 p.m.
The NIPSCO service area is seeing wide spread damage and an elevated level of power outages. Trees and poles have been downed, and NIPSCO is responding to many customer notifications of wires down. NIPSCO says on its website that all available crews continue to work as safely and quickly as possible to assess damage and restore service.
As of Wednesday afternoon approximately 16,000 customers were impacted.
NIPSCO could not estimate on Wednesday afternoon when power would be restored.
Also as of Wednesday afternoon, there are/were 16 outages in Crown Point, 283 in Dyer, 257 in East Chicago, 1,353 in Gary, 394 in Hammond, 689 in Highland, 4 in Hobart, 25 in LaPorte, 1274 in Munster, 101 in Merrillvile, 39 in Portage, 3 in Schererville and 2 in Valparaiso.
