HAMMOND - Peaceful protests in Hammond over the weekend led to a larger police intervention on Saturday, after a small group broke-off from the event and headed for 80/94. Hammond Police Department Public Information Officer, Lieutenant Steve Kellogg says the police action was to protect the safety of all.
"And the police department did receive some information that they may be headed towards the expressway, obviously that would cause a lot of concerns, so for public safety reasons, for that group included, along with the public and traffic along that expressway, we had to intervene with the Hammond Police, Lake County Police and Indiana State Police," Kellogg said.
Police were able to intervene at around 171st Street, according to Kellogg. There were no arrests, but the police and the protestors clashed momentarily, Kellogg says. No civilians or officers were injured. Some people were treated for exhaustion, after being outside for long periods and marching great distances.
There was also a peaceful protest Monday on the campus of Purdue Northwest in Hammond. That event remained peaceful. Mayor Tom McDermott Jr. did enact a curfew over the weekend, which remained in effect until 5 o'clock Tuesday morning.
