PORTER COUNTY - Another effect of COVID-19, besides wiping out sports, concerts, basic human interaction and everything else we hold dear, is lower crime, as least in Porter County anyway.
Sheriff David Reynolds told Lakeshore Public Radio that the number of inmates at the jail is down dramatically.
"Our jail population right now is lower than it's been since like the mid 1980s," Reynolds says.
He says that's an indication that people are doing their part in social distancing and staying home. As a result the Porter County Sheriff's Officers are not arresting as many people as they were before the Coronavirus.
"And most of the people arrested are DUIs or domestic violence," the Sheriff says.
Reynolds says the Porter County Sheriff's Department used to arrest about 10 to 12 people per day and that number is now down to two or three.
