GRIFFITH - The town of Griffith is still on a quest to break away from Calumet Township. Griffith tried unsuccessfully so-far to join St. John Township and North Township. The town filed a bill on Thursday, January 9th, with the Indiana Legislature that would allow it to perform its own township services.
Rick Ryfa, President of the Griffith Town Council, explains where the process is currently.
"We haven't had any luck with St. John Township or North Township. We do still have until November of 2020 to try to get something done, not sure what will happen in those areas," Ryfa says. "In the meantime we have filed a bill that was filed that would allow Griffith to essentially perform township services ourselves, and we would do that whether simply just providing township services, as required by law, or we would form our own township to facilitate the services."
Indiana Republican State Senator Rick Niemeyer, representing the 6th district is the bill's sponsor.
