GARY, Ind. (AP) — Police officers in Gary have shot a man armed with a gun after he refused to follow their commands.

Lt. Dawn Westerfield says officers responding to reports of a man with a gun Sunday afternoon encountered the suspect and when he refused to follow officers’ orders, shots were fired.

She says the man was transported to a hospital for treatment. His name hasn’t been released.

Westerfield says no officers were injured in the incident. She says the Lake County Sheriff's Department will conduct an investigation.

She didn’t say whether the suspect also fired his weapon, and she says no further information is available.
