14 Year-Old Dies After Being Found in a High School Pool

The Times/Dr. Sharon Johnson-Shirley

CALUMET TOWNSHIP- A 14-year-old boy who died after being found unresponsive at the bottom of a pool at Calumet High School has been identified as 14-year-old Curtis Walton.

The "Times" reports he was found Wednesday evening.  CPR was performed on Walton including an automatic electronic defibrillator while waiting for first responders to arrive.  He was then taken to Community Hospital in Munster and later airlifted to University of Chicago Medical Center, where he died early Thursday.

Walton was a freshman and Number 19 on the school's football team.  The pool was open to the school football players after practice on Wednesday.  Coaches and other adults were reportedly supervising the swim time, but it was not explained whether or not Walton knew how to swim.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Department is handling the case. There will be an investigation.

The school's grief counselors were made available Thursday to help students and staff. Neighboring schools in Lake and Porter counties also sent their counselors to help.  Various religious officials from local churches also responded to the school.
