NORTHWEST INDIANA - Ken Page, Psychotherapist, host of the Deeper Dating Podcast and author of the bestseller, "Deeper Dating: How to Drop the Games of Seduction and Discover the Power of Intimacy," discussed with Lakeshore Public Radio Show Host/Reporter Sharon Jackson, how people can improve their well-being by improving their love relationship.
Page suggest that people improve their well being by improving their relationships, by doing regular assessments on how they are doing.
Page says having healthy and positive relationships, which lead to good mental health, is all about connections, work life balance and quality of life.
Page says doing a "check" on how our relationships are doing is a wonderful thing to do. Just like how we look at our budget or our health, we need to look at our mental health and how that's doing.
The focus this year, the 90th anniversary of mental health month, is of the importance of taking care of our mental health, according to Page. He says the quality of our connections is just about the number one most important factor affecting mental health and with that the quality of your spousal relationship is one of the biggest determinants of your quality of life.
Page cited a study that involved over 300,000 participants that looked at indicators of social connection including the size of one's social network, your feeling of having social support and your sense of being connected overall. Researchers found that if participants scored low on the indicators of social connection, you had a similar risk of mortality as if you smoked up to 15 cigarettes a day. Page says studies have repeatedly shown and highlighted that there are huge connections between stress and physical health.
