GARY - The Gary/Chicago International Airport is marking a milestone, it's 50th international flight! Curt Ulmen, Airport Manager for the Gary/Chicago International Airport says it was the 50th international arrival, which cleared customs at the Northwest Indiana airport.
The airport has had flights from at least 14 counties, which Ulmen says demonstrates that it's developing into a true international market at Gary/Chicago.
Those countries include Canada, Mexico, England, France, the Chzechia Republic, Germany, Turks and Caicos, Greenland, Belize and the Bahamas, Ulmen says. The flights are not commercial. They are general aviation and charter, but Ulmen says the airport is looking to get the customs and border patrol facility for commercial air traffic in the future.
"Basically any aircraft that has a total of 20 passengers on board, 20 passengers and crew total, can clear customs through here instead of going to Midway, O'hare or any of the other larger airports within the country," Ulmen says.
He says the Gary/Chicago International airport offers the ability to travel throughout the entire Northwest Indiana corridor with easy and close access to Chicago and it also has its own air traffic pattern, so passengers don't get caught in traffic at Midway or O'hare Airports.
