Safe Haven Baby Boxes

MICHIGAN CITY - Franciscan Health Michigan City, now has a Safe Haven Baby Box.  That means new mothers who wish to give up their newborn child can do so legally and in a way that is safe for the baby.

Indiana’s Safe Haven Law enables a person to give up an unwanted infant anonymously without fear of arrest or prosecution. The anonymity of the Safe Haven Baby Box is a last resort for women in crisis.

Monica Kelsey, founder and CEO of Safe Haven Baby Boxes created the organization out of her own experience and said bringing a Baby Box to Franciscan was a long time coming.

Kelsey says in a 12-month period, three babies were turned over to baby boxes in Indiana and the Safe Haven Baby Boxes organization has helped 49 women choose to turn her baby over to a person in states that don't have baby boxes.

The national hotline number is 1-866-99BABY1.
