Ex-school official appears in court on misconduct charges

CROWN POINT, Ind. (AP) — An ex-school district superintendent charged with double-billing the district for about $1,200 in expenses will be able to travel in Illinois as the case moves forward.

The Post-Tribune reports 55-year-old Cheryl Pruitt made her first court appearance Monday after the former Gary Community Schools superintendent was charged this month with felony theft and official misconduct. She told a magistrate she understood the charges against her.

Pruitt resigned as superintendent in February after an emergency manager took over the district as it faced more than $100 million in debt.

Pruitt's attorney, Scott King, had asked the magistrate to expand an order allowing her to travel for work. Since April, Pruitt has worked as CEO of Chicago Virtual Charter School.

Court documents say Pruitt told an investigator the double-billing wasn't done intentionally.
