State Police Invesitigate Excessive Use of Force Allegations

MERRILLVILLE - Indiana State Police confirmed this Thursday that they have been asked to investigate an excessive force complaint against three Lake County sheriff's officers.

The investigation was spurred by an excessive force complaint filed with the Gary Police Department by Miata L. Lawson, 27, of Gary following her arrest on May 9th, for suspicion of disorderly conduct, resisting arrest, battery on law enforcement and public intoxication.

The Times reports that earlier this week, Lake County Sheriff Oscar Martinez Jr. stated his officer called for the involvement of state police after he and his chief of police determined it warranted further investigation. The three officers were reported to have arrived at Lawson's home at 1:30 AM due to a domestic disturbance, on May 9th.

The three officers under investigation hold the ranks of lieutenant, sergeant and corporal.  Sheriff's spokesman Emiliana Perez told The Times that the officers have been placed on paid administrative leave.
