Gas Prices in for a Boost

NORTHWEST INDIANA - Average retail gasoline prices in Northwest Indiana have risen just under 9 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $2.66/g Sunday, according to GasBuddy's daily survey of 314 gas outlets in the Region. This compares with the national average that has increased just over 4 cents per gallon in the last week to $2.65/g, according to gasoline price website GasBuddy.com.

Patrick DeHaan, head of petroleum analysis for GasBuddy, says this week is basically a continuation of the trend consumers have been seeing for the past couple of weeks.

"Gas prices continue to go up," DeHaan says.  "Average gas prices in Northwest Indiana are up close to 10 cents a gallon in the last week.  We are now faced with prices that are now by and large are just about a little bit lower than where they were for Hurricane Harvey and Irma, but beyond that we're almost at the highest prices we've seen since 2015 and that trend could continue as refineries continue their maintenance."

Including the change in gas prices in Northwest Indiana during the past week, prices Sunday were 33 cents per gallon higher than the same day one year ago. DeHaan says other factors for the price hike are that refineries continue to move toward the summer gasoline and oil prices still remain relatively high.

According to GasBuddy historical data, gasoline prices on April 2nd in Northwest Indiana have ranged widely over the last five years:  from $1.98/g in 2016, to $3.80/g in 2013.
