NORTHWEST INDIANA - Average retail gasoline prices in Gary have risen just over three cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $2.57/g Sunday, according to GasBuddy's daily survey of 314 gas outlets in Northwest Indiana. This compares with the national average that has increased almost 4 cents per gallon in the last week to $2.52/g, according to gasoline price website GasBuddy.com.
Patrick DeHaan, head of petroleum analysis for GasBuddy.com says this winter's prices have been different from past winters.
"This is the time of year when we see, usually, among the year's cheapest gas prices," DeHaan says. "And that certainly is not holding true or probably won't hold true this time around. Gas prices in the last week took a jump up. Average prices in Northwest Indiana about three cents a gallon higher than they were last week."
But DeHaan says that doesn't tell the whole story.
"We saw gas prices mid last week take a big jump up. They've started to trickle back down for the time being," DeHaan says. "This comes as oil prices still stubbornly high, amongst the highest they have been since late 2014 and that's what we have to thank for gas prices that average about $2.57 today. Its about .35 cents higher than where prices were a year ago."
According to GasBuddy historical data, gasoline prices on January 15 in Gary have ranged widely over the last five years:
$2.22/g in 2017, $1.75/g in 2016, $1.82/g in 2015, $3.31/g in 2014 and $3.20/g in 2013.
