Local Railroad Switching Company Supports Local Students

Pintrest

HAMMOND - Some students at Purdue University Northwest now have another scholarship opportunity.
Indiana Harbor Belt Railroad (IHBR) gave $7,600 dollars in scholarship funds to Purdue University Northwest (PNW).  The inaugural gift will fund two half-tuition scholarships for PNW students, according to Purdue University Northwest Spokesperson, Katie Stompor, Interim Director of Strategic Communications and Public Relations.

The railroad is offering the scholarship to recognize full-time students who are Northwest Indiana residents and who achieve a GPA of 3.0 and above.

Indiana Harbor Belt Railroad General Manager John Wright says IHBR believes it is important for a local company to invest back into the community, and they also realize education is one of the keys to creating a vibrant community.

Purdue Northwest Chancellor Thomas Keon says support from the university's community partners is incredibly valuable as it affirms the importance of the relationship between PNW students, the university and regional economic development.

Indiana Harbor Belt Railroad is headquartered in Hammond.  It is a switching railroad serving the greater Chicago and Northwest Indiana areas.  It has 54 miles of mainline track, that extends from Bensenville, Illinois to Indiana's International Port at Burns Harbor.
