Sixteen year-old Hammond Boy Fatally Shot In Gary

GARY - The Gary Police Department is investigating a fatal shooting that killed a 16-year-old boy in injured another man, a 20-year-old.  Public Information Officer Lieutenant Dawn Westerfield says officers responded just before 6:30 p.m. Thursday to the 400 block of South Huntington Street.

"Upon arrival officers observed a male on the ground with gunshot wounds, Westerfield said, and this 20-year-old male from East Chicago was transported to an area hospital for treatment.  Before transport the male did mention, he had a friend with him and he was unable to locate his friend at the time. While searching the area, offices found a 16-year old male from the Hammond area deceased between two vehicles."

The boy reportedly showed no signs of life and the Lake County Coroner's office later declared him dead the on scene.  A Lake County Coroner's office news release identified the 16-year-old as Diego Serna.
