HAMMOND - A program is coming to Hammond that is designed to help veterans better their lives. The program is Friday, October 27th at the Jean Shepherd Community Center. Jim Chancellor, President and CEO of American Veterans Collection Inc. says there will be information and tools on-site veterans can utilize.
"We have Ivy Tech and IUN coming to talk about fast-track two year degrees, Chancellor says. We have Franciscan Hospitals coming. We're talking to them about hiring our veterans once they get qualified. So what we're trying to do is take a veteran's family and take them off the street, put them in some type of transitional housing and then meet their needs."
Chancellor says the program will offer veterans educational opportunities and opportunities to work within unions, as many unions have apprenticeship programs specifically for veterans. Chancellor says program organizers really want to help veteran families in-need get more stability in their lives.
"And so we hope to put together a two-year program that takes a family off the street, and puts them, after two years, gives them an opportunity to buy a home and put their feet down here in Northwest Indiana," Chancellor says.
A Veterans Service Officer will also be on-hand to write disability claims for qualified veterans. Anyone who wants reservations should call (219) 730-3782.
