Northwest Indiana Gasoline Prices Relatively Unchanged This Week

GARY - Average retail gasoline prices in Northwest Indiana have not moved in the past week, averaging $2.37/g Sunday, according to GasBuddy's daily survey of 314 gas outlets in the Region. This compares with the national average that has fallen almost 2 cents per gallon in the last week to $2.45/g, according to gasoline price website GasBuddy.com.  Senior petroleum analyst for GasBuddy.com Patrick DeHaan says last week was peculiar.

"We actually did see gas prices jump up earlier in the week but then by Sunday, which was the day our data was taken, prices had fallen back to the way they were to start the week, so overall, depending on what day you filled up, you may or may not have seen an increase, DeHaan said. But prices now across Indiana are continuing to inch down."

Including the change in gas prices in Gary during the past week, prices Sunday were 26 cents per gallon higher than the same day one year ago and are just over a cent per gallon higher than a month ago.  The national average has decreased just over 16 cents per gallon during the last month and stands slightly above 22 cents per gallon higher than this day one year ago.  DeHaan says a busy Hurricane season made an impact on prices also.

"Hurricane Harvey made an impact on prices, DeHaan said.  Hurricane Irma came after and make a big impact to supply in Florida.  And then we had Hurricane Nate, which really didn't do anything to gas prices but made it challenging for oil rigs in the Gulf of Mexico.  So it's been a very very busy hurricane season, but now we're just about a month and a half away from the end of hurricane season.  Things are looking good. Supply has increased."

According to GasBuddy historical data, gasoline prices on October 16 in Gary have ranged widely over the last five years:

$2.11/g in 2016, $2.46/g in 2015, $3.12/g in 2014, $3.31/g in 2013 and $3.63/g in 2012.
