Regionally Speaking, Tuesday, October 10, 2017

The Atlantic website

Today:  Indiana Youth Institute president and CEO Tami Silverman  is back on "Regionally Speaking" to talk about the success of the first year of the Lilly Endowment-funded Comprehensive Counseling initiative.  This $22 million investment is aimed at helping school districts and charter schools implement innovative changes in school counseling.  Lake Ridge New Tech Schools, Hanover Community School Corp. and the School City of East Chicago received thousands of dollars in grants from Lilly Endowment to put their plans in place.

We bring you another conversation from the Welcome Project at Valparaiso University.  The project collects first-person stories and pairs them with intentional conversation to help forge stronger ties within and across northwest Indiana communities.

Reporter Steve Burger presents the second of a two-part series on how courts rely on psychologists to determine the competency of mentally-ill or disabled defendants, and how easily the underlying system can be abused.

We bring back a conversation about the recent accreditation of Methodist Hospitals Northlake's Level-Three trauma center, and Lakeshore Public Radio's Sharon Jackson talks with Patrick DeHaan of the gasoline price website GasBuddy.com.

This edition closes with our conversation with Purdue University Northwest Vice Chancellor Carmen Panlillio, about new records set for student retention and the number of freshman this year on the Hammond and Westville campuses.

Chris Nolte produces and hosts “Regionally Speaking” aired weekdays from noon to 1:00 p.m. He's also the temporary local "Morning Edition" host.
