CHESTERTON - Local first responders are being put on the hot seat this weekend. The Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District is set to conduct an emergency preparedness drill on Saturday, October 7th from 9am until 11 a.m.
South Shore spokesperson John Parsons says it will be held near the South Shore Line’s intersection with County Road 500E, in eastern LaPorte County, immediately east of the Indiana Toll Road overpass of the South Shore.
The South Shore is conducting this training exercise in cooperation
with the Kankakee Township Fire Department.
The drill involves the collision of a passenger train and fuel oil tanker truck and will involve the Fire Department along with LaPorte County HazMat, St. Anthony’s Hospital, LaPorte County EMA/EMS, NICTD Police Department and LaPorte County Coroner.
The South Shore is testing crew and dispatcher performance and
the effectiveness of its outreach training.
First responder agencies will be testing their new 800Mhz radios.
The drill will not affect scheduled train service.
The training. Is part of the South Shore’s continuing effort to familiarize first responders with our passenger cars and the types of circumstances they may encounter in an emergency.
