Cities, towns, and counties across northwest Indiana received 11.6 million dollars in matching-grant funds to repair region roadways and bridges. Through the Community Crossings Program, the Indiana Department of Transportation matches up to $1 million, in which INDOT selects the communities that will receive the matching-grants based on how much of a positive impact repaired roadways will have on local businesses and economic development. Counties with populations below 50,000 and cities and towns with populations below 10,000 are matched at 75 percent, while larger counties, cities and towns are matched at 50 percent. State Sen. Rick Niemeyer says in a statement, “it's easier and more accessible for local governments to apply for and receive local road funding.”
The funds that local communities receive from the CCP are in addition to the Next Level Roads Plan which provides the Hoosier state with over $214 million dollars which is set to repair state-maintained roads and bridges over the next five-years.
