The Lake County Health Department contacted Griffith town officials recently about the discovery of adult mosquitoes in the town's east side that tested positive for West Nile virus.
Town Council president Rick Ryfa tells Lakeshore Public Radio that Lake County health crews conduct several tests in four or five places in Griffith every year – and they found these mosquitoes on August 31st in the area behind the town's public works barns at Colfax and Main Street -- and tests later that day confirmed that the insects showed "positive" for West Nile.
Ryfe says there were no cases of any positive West Nile tests last summer, but there have been some in recent years before that.
West Nile Virus is transmitted by mosquitoes and can be deadly, particularly for those with weakened immune systems. Griffith officials urge extra caution for the very young and elderly.
Officials are urging residents to use insect repellent when outdoors. They also recommend that mothers or caregivers dress their children in clothing that covers arms and legs, or cover crib, stroller, and baby carrier with mosquito netting.
And – mosquito-proof your home: Use screens on windows and doors. Repair holes in screens to keep mosquitoes outside. Use air conditioning when available.
