Regionally Speaking, Monday, August 7, 2017

Annie Ropeik, IPBS

Today:   a conversation with northwest Indiana community activist Ruth Needleman, on a visit by U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Ben Carson and other political leaders to East Chicago, for an update briefing on the city's lead contamination issues and how they're being addressed.  Ruth also talks about the question of whether an Illinois steel company's move to Gary will mean more local jobs.

Indiana Public Broadcasting's Barbara Anguiano attended a weekend workshop in Hammond that is the first of a series of events intended to help the state's Latino community understand immigration policy.  She has a report for us today.

Lakeshore Public Radio's Sharon Jackson tells us more about a group of Valparaiso residents' year-long effort to create a documentary about the city in which they live and love.

Tom Pappas of the city of Portage's veterans committee is back in the studio to bring us up-to-date on veterans issues and events happening around the Region -- including a Town Hall meeting on Tuesday morning at the Jesse Brown VA Medical Center in Chicago and the annual "Stand Down" in Porter County in early September.

And Lakeshore Public Radio's Steven Lattimore talked with the head of Powers and Son Construction Company of Gary -- a business that's been named by "Black Enterprise" magazine as the 2017 Company of the Year.

Chris Nolte produces and hosts “Regionally Speaking” aired weekdays from noon to 1:00 p.m. He's also the temporary local "Morning Edition" host.
