Lake Area United way

Today:  Lisa Daugherty, President and CEO of Lake Area United Way, Guy Fisher of Goodwill's operations in northwest Indiana and Cindy Cavanaugh, the Director for the new Excel Center in Hammond are in the studio to talk about the United Way's "United for Families Network" and how the new Excel Center, supported by Goodwill, will give adults who are high school dropouts or who didn't complete their high school studies the opportunity to get Core 40 diplomas.  The new center in Hammond is patterned after a successful one in South Bend.

We bring back our conversation with Julie Giorgi, the coordinator for "Promise Porter County," a program in all seven Porter County public school districts to assist the families of first-graders to set up College Choice 529 savings accounts that will pay for college or any other post-high school educational opportunities.

Lakeshore Public Radio's Steven Lattimore spoke with a local Muslim leader about the just-completed Ramadan, the month-long ceremony toward a deeper faith. His conversation was at the Illiana Mosque in Highland, where non-Muslims can get a better understanding of the world's second largest religious faith.

And we have a conversation with Governor Eric Holcomb, Network Indiana and Indianapolis media about the issues facing the state in the months ahead, including road and other infrastructure work and the fuel tax increase -- taking effect on Friday -- that will pay for the work. Holcomb also talks abut his recent trade mission to Europe.

Chris Nolte produces and hosts “Regionally Speaking” aired weekdays from noon to 1:00 p.m. He's also the temporary local "Morning Edition" host.
