Excel Center Offers Dropouts A Chance To Earn Their Diplomas

NPR

The Lake Area United Way's "United for Families Network" is opening an opportunity for adults who are high school dropouts or who didn't complete their high school studies to get Core 40 diplomas -- the same diplomas that they would've earned had they stayed in school.

The new Excel Center, supported by Goodwill in northwest Indiana, is patterned after a successful center in South Bend.

Lisa Daugherty, President and CEO of Lake Area United Way, Guy Fisher of Goodwill of Michiana and Cindy Cavanaugh, the Director for the new Excel Center in Hammond all came into the "Regionally Speaking" studio on Wednesday to explain the new program and what it can mean for adults who want better-paying jobs and new careers.  Guy Taylor begins the conversation.

Chris Nolte produces and hosts “Regionally Speaking” aired weekdays from noon to 1:00 p.m. He's also the temporary local "Morning Edition" host.
