Today: a conversation with Speros Batistatos, President and CEO of the South Shore Convention and Visitors Authority, on some summertime "stay-cation" ideas -- making short trips to places here in northwest Indiana -- and his thoughts on the decision to close and demolish the Star Plaza Theatre after its final performances in December.
The theatre's owner, Merrillville-based White Lodging, announced last week that the facility as well as the Twin Towers office complex on the site at U.S. 30 and I-65 would be torn down to make way for future development. Speros was with us when the initial announcement was made last year to demolition -- and when it was delayed.
We bring you the second in our "Great Lakes Today" feature series on the impact of proposed Trump administration cuts in programs that would affect all Great Lakes states, including Indiana. This time, we hear from Chuck Quirmbach about the Asian carp problem.
Indiana Youth Institute President and CEO Tami Silverman talks about the Indiana statistics found in the Annie E. Casey Foundation's 2017 "KIDS COUNT Data Book." It ranks Indiana as 28th in the nation for child well-being.
And we'll have the "Times" of Northwest Indiana's recent podcast on the impending sales and -- in some cases-- closings of Strack and VanTil Supermarkets and Ultra Supermarkets in the aftermath of the Central Grocers bankruptcy.
